When You Want a Grant, Look Locally First
By Jillian Wheeler | February 18, 2008
When students in my Grants Training Classes start looking for grants for their projects, I always encourage them to check out local grant makers first, before they start searching for regional or national funders.
Almost every community has local foundations that have money to give to projects in their area. These may be family, corporate or community foundations. In addition, many area businesses make grants to worthy projects in their local communities. You can begin with your local telephone directory, as foundations are usually listed in the yellow pages. For businesses, go to their websites; information about giving is usually displayed under a heading such as “community.”
Here’s a great example. In 2007, the Stark Foundation of southeast Texas gave $1,421,920 to local schools and universities for educational projects; $736,150 to local arts and cultural projects; $519,632 to local health and social service programs; and $712,000 to local city governments and the local Red Cross Chapter.
The size of the individual grants varied from $1,000 to $1,000,000. Some of the recipients were large, well established groups, and others were small organizations. When you identify a funder like this one, you always want to look and see what kind of projects they have funded in recent years, and the size of previous grants.
In our Grants Training Classes, we show you exactly how to find all the local – as well as state, regional, national and international – grant makers. We show you where to go to find out what kind of grants they offer, and how to determine if you will qualify for their funding. You learn exactly how to contact them and how to apply.
Our Grants Training Classes are conducted by email between each student and me personally. I walk you through the whole process, making it easy and painless. The class lasts for 9 weeks, and at the end – if you choose – you can even become a Certified Grant Writer and write grants for clients.
We have an unanticipated opening in our current class. Get much more information, view testimonials from former students, and enroll online, at:
