The Power of a Grant

By Jillian Wheeler | March 20, 2008

Deep in east Austin, in the poorest neighborhood in the city, is a little school called Escuela Montessori de Montopolis.

Escuela provides a quality bilingual education to children 2 to 6 years old. Music and art are emphasized, and the children go on field trips and have experiences that would otherwise never be possible for them.

In an area of town where 4 out of 10 kids never even graduate from high school, kids who have attended Escuela are doing well and earning As in public school. In the 30 year history of Escuela, hundreds of former students have gone on to college and career success.

A few years ago, supporters of Escuela were very worried. The school was located in an old house. The roof leaked, the floors sloped, and there were holes in the walls. Then the owner died, the lease was cancelled, and they were told they had to move within six months.

Over the years, the Board and teachers had gotten by with the assistance of parents and a few well-to-do supporters. It had never occurred to them to search for grants, and they didn’t even know where or how to begin.

But now they reached out and asked for help.

Within a few months, Escuela received a number of very generous grants, and bought a beautiful, tree-covered lot. A brand new building was erected,  and new furnishings arrived. Parents got together and painted murals, built a playground, and planted an organic garden.

Today, Escuela Montessori de Montopolis is a considered a model for preschools all over the country.
