The Jackson Renaissance
By Jillian Wheeler | April 17, 2009
The City of Jackson, Mississippi is undergoing a downtown renaissance.

Existing buildings, such as the beautiful Capitol Complex pictured above, are being renovated and updated. New buildings, such as a graceful, modern federal courthouse, are being added.
As part of the renaissance project, the City is offering assistance to business owners who want to beautify their storefront facades. And of course, the City also helps homeowners and those who hope to become homeowners, with programs such as historic preservation for older homes, home repairs and down payment assistance.

The City is also committed to increasing the stock of available affordable housing. Jackson’s Office of Housing and Community Development helps plan the distribution of federal funds including Community Block Grant Funds (CDBG); Home Investment Partnership Funds (HOME), American Dream Down-payment Initiative (ADDI), Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG) and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA). The funds are used to improve housing, facilities, and promote economic development for low to moderate income households as required by HUD.
Like Jackson, cities all over the country are looking for investors and developers to partner with them in creating livable, reasonably-priced rental housing, as well as housing for sale.
