Southern California Fires
By Jillian Wheeler | November 4, 2007
I’ve just returned from a speaking trip, first to Las Vegas for a couple of days, then for ten days in Los Angeles and San Diego. I enjoy going to Southern California for a number of reasons. I have friends and clients there, of course, and it’s always fun to catch up with them. I love the climate, and going for long walks. Most of all, I love the beach. Some of my best work has been done sitting on the sand at Laguna Beach, often brainstorming with my “long distance mastermind group,” the folks at Rich Dreams.
This trip was different. In the past when there have been fires in the mountains surrounding LA and San Diego, I’ve been able to see the smoke. This time the flames were plainly visible from many vantage points in the cities.
Because of the fires, most people rarely ventured outdoors; consequently, I did very little social visiting. I was scheduled to speak almost every night, but often ended up making presentations to five or six people. Every morning we awoke to find a thick layer of ash on top of our cars, and floating in the air we were breathing. A million people were evacuated from their homes, including a number of my friends. Although no one I know personally lost their homes (as far as I’m aware), many “friends of friends” did have houses destroyed. These were the worst fires I can remember in my years living in and visiting the area.
During the next few months, much will be accomplished using grant funds. FEMA will be offering grants, and there will undoubtedly be grants from the state, county and city governments. Southern California non-profit agencies will be extending a helping hand to those affected, and their work will be funded by grants. Area foundations are already gearing up to meet the need.
If you’re excited about solving problems in your community, or in the world at large, and you have ideas that can be powered with grant money, consider enrolling in our Grants Training Classes.
We had planned to hold the next classes early in 2008, but we have a waiting list now, and we’ve decided to accommodate those folks. So we are offering a class that begins next week.
Each class is limited to 15 participants. Although I have a great staff, I teach each class myself, and I offer the classes around my consulting schedule. As a result, I can’t say when the next classes will be held. We do still have some openings.
These are email classes. You receive a lesson each week by email, then send me your homework. I then work closely with you in conceptualizing your project, finding funds, and writing your grant application. You also learn how to create a non-profit, or utilize your existing non-profit to maximize your access to grants. Through this class, you can become a Certified Grant Writer and write grants for others. You can get much more information, and hear testimonials by former students, at:

This is the best, most comprehensive training available anywhere. Enroll online to ensure you get a seat.
As always, if you have any questions, feel free to email me at jillian@grantmerich.com.
