Grants for Economic Development
By Jillian Wheeler | May 28, 2009
One of the most exciting programs funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is the $150 million in grant funds that are available as Economic Development Administration Recovery Funding.
EDA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce; it supports the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States. Its mission is to lead the federal economic develpment agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, and preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.
The $150 million is to be used to create new jobs and uplift the economies of parts of the country that have experienced job losses and business closures. The grants will be disbursed through EDA’s six Regional Offices to states, local governments, and eligible non-p;rofits.
Those agencies will then be responsible for using the funds to support new job creation and foster greater business investment and development in communities.
The bottom line: EDA grants will “trickle down” very quickly through local entities, and the money will be made available to recipients at the state and local level.
Are you interested in participating in the economic development of your community? Do you have a business project you believe will create jobs? Keep an eye on this funding.
What else can you do?
This is a great time for you, or someone in your organization whom you designate, to learn about grants. Our Grants Training Classes provide indepth information about finding all kinds of grants (government, foundation and corporate), as well as how to write winning grant proposals. The classes also show you how to deal with the funding agencies.
