Government Grants in Raleigh, NC

By Jillian Wheeler | January 4, 2008

Raleigh, N.C., is now the 49th largest city in the country, with a population of 374,320. The growth rate there exceeds that of most other midsize American cities, largely because of the healthy economy and attractive lifestyle.

Raleigh has a variety of exciting grants programs available through the city’s Community Development Department. One of the main areas on which they focus is bringing new life into old neighborhoods, as evident in the photograph below:

Affordable Housing

The Livable Streets Plan is transforming the face of the downtown area. For example, the Fayetteville Street Renaissance was completed in July. That project reshaped and beautified four blocks in the center city.

Recent projects funded through Raleigh’s Community Enhancement Grants include these:

The Rise-Home Program provides training and support services to help low- and moderate-income Vietnamese families of greater Raleigh overcome financial disadvantages and become homeowners. Rise-Home trained 200 residents about financial issues relating to homeownership.

Program Building Rehab– Funds for Neighbor to Neighbor Ministries were used to renovate the Comprehensive Youth Development Center (1200 South Blount Street) and bring the building up to code. The Youth Center is used for elementary and middle school students for homework labs, computer training, and life skills training.

Of course, as is most parts of America, there is ample opportunity for investors and developers to access City, State and Federal dollars to buy or build affordable housing. Perry Hill is a great example of what can be done when investors and government work together. This 48-unit family apartment complex received $675,000 in federal HOME funds, and over $3 million from various state programs.
