Economic Stimulus Funds Progress Report
By Jillian Wheeler | June 6, 2009
The federal government has set up a website to educate the American public about the intricacies of the Economic Stimulus (ARRA) package passed earlier this year. There’s a lot of great information on the site, including a bar chart updated weekly that depicts the amount of money made available, and the amount expended thus far.
Between April 24th and May 29th, a total of $135.4 Billion was made available. During the same period, $43.7 Billion was actually paid out. Most of the funds are currently going to state and local governments and eligible non-profits. In some cases, those agencies will use the money to accomplish high-priority projects (flood prevention activities is a good example). The agencies themselves are sometimes hiring new employees to do the work directly, or for administrative management. In other cases they may invite bids and issue contracts to private businesses to complete the projects.
In numerous instances, however, the agencies that receive the Stimulus funding will “pass it through” in the form of grants. Over the next few months we’ll be seeing more and more Requests for Proposals for grant funds in communities all over the United States. These RFPs will offer grant funding for a whole array of different kinds of projects, from housing to economic development, from serving youth to serving seniors – and everything in between. All this money has been carefully targeted, as I said in an earlier post, to stimulate the economy and create jobs, while strengthening the country’s infrastructure with a “green” consciousness.
This level of federal funding has not been previously available during my lifetime. It will offer huge opportunities to create good in your community, as well as opportunities for you to participate directly in the economic recovery.
